Member Profile
My interest is best summarized by the mission and vision of the Virginia Tech organization I co-founded: TEAM Malawi [Technology-Education-Advocacy-Medicine] is a transdisciplinary collaboration, based upon a community wellness model of health, designed to meet the challenges of resource-limited environments through community-based participatory research/design/pedagogy. Vision: Utilize a community wellness model as the framework to integrate the activities of a disparate group of young investigators and mentors.
Student engagement is our primary goal and it is our desire to:
- Foster global perspectives of students.
- Stimulate ideas for improving conditions in a developing country.
- Create sustainable relationships that promote transdisciplinary models for development.
- Encourage evidence-based applied scholarly research.
I have taken undergraduate and graduate engineering students to Malawi, Africa as part of research and service projects. I intend to establish Biomedical Engineering Global Societal Ethics as a study abroad experience. I mentor undergraduate design groups that are creating solutions to needs for healthcare in low- and middle-income countries.
