There is great educational value in taking students out of the classroom. This may seem counter to the premise of our educational system, but when you take students outside of the classroom, they engage with their environments as individuals curious about how things work rather than as students subjected to tests, homework, and exams. From 2017-2020, I taught and traveled with first-year engineering students at Virginia Tech and watched them learn about other cultures as well as their own in the process. I engaged in global engineering education and research through the RSAP program with other faculty and graduate students who exemplify the traits that we help students develop.
